The Yoga Journal Re-Design is on Newstands NOW!!!

For more than 30 years, Yoga Journal has been giving its readers all the info they need on the expansion and revolution of the yoga movement. Yoga Journal is the perfect magazine for yoga teachers, yoga newbies, those interested in perfecting & expanding their yoga techniques, and those who are interested in learning more about yoga. The ever-growing yoga community loves Yoga Journal. It provides tons of awesome articles, pose technique tips, food & nutrition info, and more. Like the community has evolved over the years, so has Yoga Journal. They are now are proud to present yogajournal.com as well–an interactive, in-depth, yoga community website.

The Yoga Journal re-design has officially launched and the new body issue is on newsstands now! The bright #yogajournal relaunch makes us want even more asana and off the mat inspiration. I am a fitness junkie so of course I work yoga into my fitness regime; however, I am very far off from being a yogi. So even not being super knowledgeable about yoga- the Yoga Journal really was a great fitness read. I could relate to all of the articles and really learned a lot. Very fitness oriented and it definitely made me want to incorporate even more yoga into my routine. It provides lots of tips, healthy living advise, pose techniques, and so much more. And the website provides you tons of info - check it out!

Want to learn pose basics or want to learn about advanced yoga poses? Check out yogajournal.com. Here is an example:

chaht-tour-ANG-ah don-DAHS-anna)
chaturanga
= four limbs (chatur = four
anga = limb)
danda = staff (refers to the spine, the central “staff” or support of the body)
Step by Step

Perform Adho Mukha Svanasana, then Plank Pose. Firm your shoulder blades against your back ribs and press your tailbone toward your pubis.

With an exhalation slowly lower your torso and legs to a few inches above and parallel to the floor. There’s a tendency in this pose for the lower back to sway toward the floor and the tailbone to poke up toward the ceiling. Throughout your stay in this position, keep the tailbone firmly in place and the legs very active and turned slightly inward. Draw the pubis toward the navel

Keep the space between the shoulder blades broad. Don’t let the elbows splay out to the sides; hold them in by the sides of the torso and push them back toward the heels. Press the bases of the index fingers firmly to the floor. Lift the top of the sternum and your head to look forward.

Chaturanga Dandasana is one of the positions in the Sun Salutation sequence. You can also practice this pose individually for anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds. Release with an exhalation. Either lay yourself lightly down onto the floor or push strongly back to Adho Mukha Svanasana, lifting through the top thighs and the tailbone.

For more than 35 years, Yoga Journal has shaped the yoga revolution in America, that's right it has been around since 1975! It was created by members of the California Yoga Teachers Association to unite the growing yoga community and provide accurate yoga info from those in the know!

As you all know yoga is now very popular in the America culture. According to Yoga Journal’s most recent Yoga in America survey, 20.4 million people in the United States now practice  yoga! And while more people are practicing yoga than ever before, the real reason for Yoga Journal’s continued success is that it remains true to its original mission: to provide yoga enthusiasts with the best, most well-researched and inspirational information about a 5,000 year old tradition that is just as relevant today.

Force Fitness: Jump Force Review

Annie Mairs, 2005

This DVD contains a 10 minute workout, a 45 minute workout and three cooldown options. You will need a step bench, a jump rope, and a light pair of dumbbells for this workout. Annie leads in a large lobby set with a group of exercisers, one showing beginner & one showing advanced modifications.

After a built in warmup, you move into one minute intervals alternating high rep strength work and cardio. Exercises include jump rope variations, step knee repeaters, tri kickbacks, bi curls, side to side shuffle, basic step, L step with a kick, tire run, chest press, lat row, step ham curls, lunge & muscle man bi curls,  and step kicks. Some of the aerobic moves also utilize the light weights to really get your heart pumping.

I rate this an advanced routine if you are using an actual jump rope. It is nonstop and really gets your heart pumping. I love that it is easy to follow and really enjoy the one minute intervals. Annie is a great lead with good form pointers. She does yell encouragement from time to time. Very athletic and provides a great workout! I did not receive this dvd to review.

4 small zucchini, diced
5 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes
1 cup cherry tomatoes, sliced in half

Leslie Sansones: Mix & Match Walk Blasters REVIEW

Leslie Sansone, 2014

This DVD contains ten 10 minute walk sections that you can mix and match to create many workout options. The DVD is fully chaptered, has music only options, and includes fun premixes. You will need optional light hand weights for some of the segments.  Leslie works out with a group of walkers in a spacious studio.

Light Walk: This section is meant to be used for the warmup or for a very light walk. Exercises include walk, side step, ham curls, walking up & back, and front heel taps all to a slower beat.

Dance Walk: Leslie adds a little flair to her traditional walk, front heel taps, front & side mambo adding a cha cha, double side step & grapevine.

Short & Sweaty: This is the most challenging of the bunch with a faster tempo and bigger arm movements. Exercises include low impact skater, side step, ham curl with up & out arms, low impact cardio lunges, kick & reach, and front heel taps.

Brisk & Steady: Exercises include walking, kicks, side step, knee pull, side tap with arm extensions, walk & overhead reach and walking up and back.

Upper Body Blaster: Using light hand weights, exercises include marching, side steps, kicks, side tap, ham curls, and walking up & back. Leslie adds bicep curls, delt raises, overhead raises tri pushbacks to the walking.

Lower Body Blast: This segment includes lots of squats, squat- lunge combos, and of course walking, side step, kicks, and walking up and back.

Interval: In this segment Leslie alternates slow/moderate tempo with 60 seconds of boosted walking. The boosted walking is jogging up, back and in place and the lower intensity exercises include walking, side taps, and side steps.

Walk, Kick, & Jab: In this segment Leslie mixes in low front kicks, double side step with low side kicks, jabs & crosses in with her normal walking, side taps, side steps, and walking up & back.

Tummy Toners: Interspersed with side step, and walking is low skater with a rotation, knee ups with rotation, double side step & reach, knee to elbow pull downs, side knee pulls, and front heel taps.

Flexibility Walk: This section is meant to be used as a cooldown and includes about 5 min of light walking, side steps, low kicks, and low knees, and 5 minute of standing stretches.

These are lower intermediate workouts. The DVD contains a ton of variety and I love the mix & match option. Leslie is her usual chatty, upbeat self and provides motivation as she goes. Each segment contains a healthy living tip. I enjoy the variety of segments and the ability to mix & match. This is a very versatile dvd. I received this DVD to review.

SweeTango Apples: Healthy Snacking Never Tasted SOOOO Good!

Have you tried SweeTango apples? If not, you need to! They are AMAZING and their season is NOW! I had the pleasure of trying some for review and I am a convert. Literally the best apple I have ever had. My previous favorite was Fuji- but these are SO much better. They are super crisp, sweet, and refreshing. My husband fell in love as well and I grabbed some more at the store over the weekend.  I spotted them at my local Kroger store – so run out and get some now, while you can. Fall is upon us and its apple season- don’t miss the SweeTango season this fall, you will be sad if you do. They make the perfect addition to your kids lunches this fall, your lunch, or an after school snack!

We all know that healthy snacks are important for the whole family, but I know it can be hard to find something that your family will enjoy, be excited about eating, and that you can feel good about feeding them. Grab some SweeTango apples this fall and the whole family will be happy!

My husband & I enjoyed chomping right into them- they are a delicious snack as is. Want to add some protein? Slice up your SweeTango’s and dip them in some all natural nut butter. I brought almond butter and SweeTango slices to work for my midafternoon snack and it kept me full until dinner – and of course it tasted amazing. I tricked my taste buds into thinking I was having a guilty treat, when in fact I was having a healthy, well balanced snack

I also diced up some SweeTango’s, chopped cooked chicken breasts, walnuts, greek yogurt, & curry powder for an amazing chicken salad. This tasted great on toasted whole grain bread, or on top of a bed of lettuce. Even hubby & my teenage nieces enjoyed this!

It is apple season and SweeTango’s will please the whole family. Def give them a try if you haven’t already and I am sure you will be a convert too! Sweet, crispy, and full of flavor – SweeTango’s are the taste of fall.

Rapidforce Physio Hybrid Shapes: 15X Stronger than Kinesiology Tape

ATTENTION all home exercisers, runners, gym junkies, fitness fanatics, and everyone activeRAPIDFORCE phs shapes are new products dedicated to innovative, simple solutions to muscle support and pain management. Based on the science of physiology and movement, RAPIDFORCE phs shapes serve as an external muscular-skeletal layer, providing unprecedented support. RAPIDFORCE phs lifts the muscle which results in numerous benefits including muscle support, pain relief, increased blood flow and improved range of motion. These are PERFECT for all your sports & fitness injuries and strains.

I use them on my knee & ankle when I do my 5k, 10k, or 15k runs. They are very supportive and are super easy to use. I love that they are sleek and stick right to the skin. No more bulky knee braces or ankle wraps. They even work great on the obstacle races, mud runs, and can get wet. They are very easy to use. I put mine on the night before so that its ready to go, since the races are SO early here. Whenever my knee and ankle give me problems I use these. They come in a variety of shapes which are specifically designed for different muscle groups.

They are so much easier to use than kinesiology tapes. Ive tried other tapes & I have to use a YouTube video to try to figure them out, then I have to measure, cut, etc. Its a pretty big ordeal lol. I love the ease of just being able to peel and apply the RapidForce phs shapes. I also love that the shapes contour to that muscle group quick & easy like. They are super strong and really stay put. Here is the I Shape that can be used on your ankle or on your feet. I love that each option includes a description of what ailment it is designed for and easily shows you where to stick!

RapidForce, an innovative muscle support and pain relief adhesive application, announced today a strategic partnership with professional tennis player John Isner. Currently the highest-ranked male American tennis player, Isner wears RapidForce during competitions to help with knee support. He is wearing it as he competes this week at the 2014 US Open Tennis Championships. Here are the three knee options they offer:

You can really tell that RapidForce is fifteen times stronger than other kinesiology tape products. RapidForce Physio Hybrid Shapes are a revolutionary hybrid of a brace and kinesiology tape. The pre-cut compression fabric shapes aid in pain reduction and improved stability for the most frequent musculoskeletal issues and injuries. The shapes are engineered to deliver endurance, stability and pain relief to athletes and fitness enthusiasts during times of muscle and joint soreness and discomfort. With the perfect balance of strength and elasticity, the shapes apply the right amount of force to support the muscles without inhibiting natural movement.  This force aids the body to bring new oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the sore or injured area to help facilitate healing.

The Physio Hybrid Shapes are adhesive applications that are applied directly to your skin and remain on for up to five days. The shapes were designed using the science of physiology and movement to mimic the muscle structure of the body. Each shape has a center point where it gives the most structure and support and 'arms' that borrow stability and strength from underlying muscles, tendons and ligaments, providing reinforcement and increased circulation to the injured area.

“Engineered to give you stability like a brace and flexibility like kinesiology tape in one easy to use, comfortable product, nothing else like them exists on the market today,” said Smith.  “Physio because we actually make a physiological change for people reducing pain and fluid build-up; Hybrid because we are the only product that is a hybrid of tapes and a brace and Shapes because we have pre-cut anatomically designed shapes like nothing else on the market.”

Unique Design:
  • 15X stronger than kinesiology tape
  • Compression fabric flexibility
  • 1-5 day wear
  • Easy to apply and wear
  • Acrylic medical-grade adhesive formula, hypo-allergenic and latex free
  • Seven pre-cut shapes for the legs, knees, ankles/feet, shoulders, back, arms/elbow
Promotes Healing:
  • Reduces pain and inflammation
  • Improves joint stability
  • Improves blood flow
  • Increases range of motion
  • Promotes healing and recovery

Tracie Long's FitPrime G-Force Review

FitPrime G-Force
Tracie Long, 2004

Tracie leads this 53 min rebouding + weights workout alone in a mansion-esque set. You will need weighted gloves, dumbbells, and a rebounder for this workout. The dvd is fully chaptered. Tracie wears the weighted gloves for the entire workout.

After a warmup, the workout contains three cardio rebounding sections, each followed by a shorter strength routine and concludes with a cooldown. Rebounding exercises include: hi knee jog with clean & press or bi curls, side to side jumps, forward & back jumps, twists, double jog, jacks, front -side- and back kicks, football shuffle, split jumps on/off rebounder, march/ jog, hops, stepping on & off the rebounder, and hop scotch. Strength work includes: rows, bi curls, leg press, dips, pushups, tri dips, crunches, wiper legs, rolling back to V hold & bounce, leg drops, side knee drops, and sit up variations.

I rate this a solid intermediate but with any rebounding workout you can vastly vary the intensity depending on how you bounce. Tracies form instruction and cuing are impeccable as usual and the routine is very easy to follow without being boring at all. The strength segments break up the rebounding and keep it very interesting. One of the best rebounding routines I have ever done.

We used ours on our recent trip to Mexico and they worked wonders. We were in THICK jungle and near the water so there were definitely mosquitoes about. We went unbitten and the bands are light, small, and easy to pack in your pack if you are backpacking! Mosqunitno also offers cute citronella Spotz that are easy to stick on your body and they stay put! Available in cute styles and solid colors, the kids will love them!

Mosquitno wristbands are made of silicone rubber infused with 100% citronella oil. Each Mosquitno Bands contains enough citronella to effectively repel bugs for up to 150 hours of exposure (or six days), and each comes in a re-sealable pouch to preserve effectiveness between uses.  Mosquitno Bands are available in eight solid colors, camouflage, tie-dye and glow-in-the-dark in sizes for adults and children.

The citronella oil smells great and is directly infused into Mosquitno Bands works by masking human scents – carbon dioxide and sweat - that attract bugs. Mosquitno Bands are more effective than citronella candles because they are worn on the body and the citronella scent is not dissipated by the wind.

Mosquitno Bands retail for only $3.99. All Mosquitno products are non-toxic, chemical-free and DEET-free. Used Mosquitno Bands can be mailed back to the company for recycling in return for two new, free Mosquitno Bands (for every 10 returned). This dvd contains 2 complete workouts (42/ 37 min) that can combined for a 71 minute sweatfest. This is FIRM parts dvd and all routines are total body strength workouts.
The DVD is fully chaptered. You will need a small ball, weights, ankle weights, and a step for this routine.

Workout One: After a fun ball warmup & stretch, exercises include floor core work, pushups, plank series, T bar rows, bi work, bent rows, squat series, over head press, leg press, French press, tri kickbacks, lunge-dip-squat sequence, tri dips, pec fly, rib cage pullover & tri extensions, box pushups, low back work, crunches,
and a final stretch with pelvic floor contractions.

Workout Two: After a 4 limb warm up and stretch, exercises include a ball sports drill, squats, pliets, standing glute raises, lat row, tri kickbacks, heavy bi work, leg press, upright row, clean & press, front & side raise, upper back fly & rhomboid pinch, pushups, bridge work, floor core work, and a final stretch.

I rate these high intermediate routines that you can make more or less challenging depending on the weights you use. The pace is great and my heart rate stayed up while getting in a great strength workout. Both routines are very well balanced & I felt all my muscles got worked.
