This dvd contains three 20 minute workouts that can be played individually or you can select play all from the main menu. You will need a chair and a small ball/pillow and light weights. Jessica works out alone on a dock with a pool overlooking the water. Jessica works out barefoot.

Cardio Ballet: Exercises include side step knee raise, prance, gran pliet pulses, heel raises, arabesque, close stance plie hops, plie jacks, pliet pulse & hops with swan arms, chasse, plie pulse & side bend, core side reaches and an active stretch. Jessica adds fun ballet style arm movements to up the calorie burn.

Floor Barre: Exercises include core series lying over the ball, bridge series with the ball in knees, attitude helicopter leg series, cobra pulses, pushup pulses, ball squeezes, side planks with the ball in between feet, and an oblique series. Jessica does a great job of using the ball in different ways to enhance each exercise.

Barre Burn: Exercises include ham curls, passe & chest hug, tree pose & V pull down, pulsing close stance squats & upper back fly, tri hold & glute raises, kickback balancing stick, 1st position pulse & strong man curls, gran plie & criss-cross front raise, plank series off the chari w/ leg & core work, plank to pike with calf raises, standing side leg raises & pull downs, lunge & row, gran pliet & row and stretch. Perfect exercises for lighter weights.

I rate these lower intermediate routines. These are some super unique workouts that combine fun new exercises that will get the muscles burning and heart pumping. The exercises are easy to follow and Jessicas instruction is, as always, impeccable. These workouts really have something for everyone- graceful ballet, fun cardio, muscle burn, and fun unique exercises. I received this dvd to review.

Interview: Fitness Professional Toby Massenburg (7-3-2012)

The Belles are very excited to have had the opportunity to interview Toby Massenburg from Total Max Fitness! Toby is a nationally certified group instructor, personal trainer and top-tiered Master Instructor for Equinox Fitness Clubs. He holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise science as well as many other fitness certifications.

Belles: Prior to the release of your first workout, Max 30, many at home exercisers were familiar with you as a background exerciser in other workouts. What can you tell us about the difference between being a background exerciser vs. leading the workout?
Toby: The biggest difference has to be the pressure you place on yourself. When you are in the background your biggest obstacle is executing someone else’s vision as best as you can. When you are the lead it’s a whole other ballgame, because although you still want to perform to the best of your abilities, you have to wear many other hats. From lighting, to camera shots, to editing, etc., you have to stretch yourself to showcase your own personal vision. Which makes it mean a lot more to you because it’s your baby and you want others to enjoy it because you love it. In a way you are way more vulnerable. I remember during the last practice run through on Max 30 I was on the verge of tears because I was so nervous and the pressure was so great I didn’t think I could do it. Paul Katami told me to just be myself because the workout is great but what they really want is your personality.
Belles: What motivated you to create your first workout DVD, Max 30?
Toby: My motivation came from Patrick Goudeau for sure. We were filming “Lean, Hot, Body” and he kept asking me “When are you going to come out with a release?” I didn’t even think it was possible, but he pushed me and mentored me step by step. I will forever be grateful to him for believing in me. Thank you Patrick!
Belles: Your workout Max 30 was well received by many home exercisers. How will your new workout Chiseled compare or contrast to the original workout?
Toby: I like to think of Chiseled as Max 30 SUPER-SIZED. I listened to the fans of Max 30 and brought what they loved best about the workout to the next level. While Max 30 was two, 30 min workouts, Chiseled is a full-hour of non-stop calorie burning, muscle building, and core cutting excitement.
Belles: We are extremely excited about, and anxiously awaiting, the release of your newest workout, Chiseled, what can you tell us about it? Do you have any other workouts slated to be released?
Toby: The Chiseled workout moves between 60 sec compound strength drills and 60 sec cardio/plyometric drills, with short rest periods between. The best thing about Chiseled is that at every 20 sec I give an option to increase the intensity so the user can customize how hard they want to work. Too often we either get bored or out grow out workouts, but with Chiseled you grow with the program. If you are feeling like you want the base challenge, you can stay at a level 1, but if you want to push yourself to your limit, you have the option to push it to level 3 for the full 60 sec. Or split the levels and work your way up. I like to think of it as a “choose your own adventure” workout.
I’m currently penning two 30 min releases. One will be a high-impact challenge and the other will be a low-impact challenge. The working titles are “Ignite” and “Afterburn.” I’m shooting for a 2013 release, so you have not heard the last from me yet
Belles: We know the importance of variety in a fitness routine and fitting in all the different exercise genres. But with time
being limited, what advice do you have for us to find a good balance? How do you find time to fit it all in?
Toby: Variety is the spice of life and the same can be said about how you move your body. I find that the best way to get a good balance is to schedule alternate intensities in your workouts. If you choose to do a heavy intensity, then the next day you should choose something restorative. The idea that you have to run yourself into the ground with every workout is totally false. The best way to gain results is to challenge yourself past your comfort zone. Then the next day, reward yourself with low intensity. As far as fitting it all in, that comes down to preparation. I recommend to all my clients to sit down with their calendars and actually schedule your workouts at least one week in advance including the day, time and duration. If we write it down and place it somewhere we see every day, it’s more likely it will happen. To truly see a change we all should commit to a goal of at least 300 minutes a week, which comes out to be about 5 hours a week. We don’t always have an hour or more to exercise, but we can all spare 20 min here and there to add to our weekly total. Whether it’s taking the stairs at our office building, taking a short jog around the block, or playing with our children, something is always better than nothing.
Belles: What is the best piece of fitness advice that you personally have ever received or have given to a client?
Toby: Fitness is a continuum. To truly see a difference, we must challenge ourselves past our comfort zones and explore other modes of movement. Too often we find comfort in our normal routines, whether it’s dumbbell selection, type of workout, or the intensity we are willing to push ourselves to. The thought is that if we move outside of what we know, disaster will follow. In actuality we find success when we push past the limits we place on ourselves. So my challenge to you all is to try something different. Something that you thought was not right for you for two weeks. You will be surprised by the amazing results that will follow.

Q&A With Fitness Pro: Laura Tarbell (3-21-2012)

The Belles are very excited to have had the opportunity to interview Laura Tarbell of Tarbell Pilates! Laura Tarbell is an internationally known Pilates Instructor, trained and certified by STOTT PILATES, and she is a Nutrition and Wellness Consultant certified through the American Fitness Professionals Association (AFPA). She is a wife and a mother of two year old twin boys. She is a fitness model, most recently seen in Oxygen Magazine’s 2012 Fat Loss Special.

Belles: Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you got involved in the fitness industry?Laura: I’ve been an athlete all my life. However, I suffered from chronic back pain after jamming two lumbar vertebra when I during high school. When I graduated from college, I wanted to stay active so I took up running and weight lifting. However, my back was still an issue. Shooting pain from my lower back down my right leg kept me from reaching my goals. When I discovered the power of Pilates, I wanted to know everything about it. I became a certified instructor so I could share it with my family and community. It started out small, but in a few months my classes were packed. After I had my first set of twins! I decided I didn’t want to work full time. I opened my Pilates studio and have been in love with my new career ever since. It doesn’t feel like work because Ive truly found my passion in helping people reach their fitness goals.
Belles: There is quite a bit of emphasis these days on the importance of strengthening the core – or powerhouse. Would you like to add your thoughts?
Laura: I believe Jospeh Pilates put it best when he said, “You are only as young as your spine.” The core is the support that gives the spine strength and mobility. Strengthening the core is not only essential to athletic health, and a great six-pack!, but essential to movement in our everyday lives. From lifting grocery bags to sitting at a desk at work, the core is involved in everything you do. If it weak, the rest of the body will be effected.
Belles: Your core is rock solid! While core specific training is partly responsible, we all know that a proper nutrition plan is 80% of weight loss success and maintenance. Do you have a healthy eating plan or strategy
Laura: I do watch my nutrition carefully. I eat clean 90% of the day and leave a little room for error. Its the only way to stay sane!  I choose whole, natural foods as much as possible, including fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, low fat dairy, and whole grains. There are so many great recipes out there to keep you satisfied. I dont really have the desire to eat things like french fries or bacon. I also eat to feel happy and energized.  Do I love a big hamburger with sweet potato fries – yes! But it doesn’t leave me energized. So I don’t indulge very often. And if i do, its only a small, portion-controlled amount.
Everything can be eaten in moderation, or you can find a healthy version to satisfy your taste. I have a really great chocolate chip protein cookie recipe that is totally guilt free! I love it! And I feel good about letting my kids eat them too. (i’ll be posting it on my blog this week!)
Belles: You have created some awesome at home pilates fitness dvds, is pilates your go-to workout or do you mix it up with other genres?
Laura: Pilates and running are definitely my go-to workouts. I love the way Pilates makes me feel- toned, lean, taller, and energized.  It has a relaxing effect on the mind as well. I mix in a bit of weights, including pull ups, incline press, bicep curls, to name a few. Basically, all the exercises that I don’t do on the reformer (which isn’t many!)
Belles: Can we expect any future workout dvds from you? If so, what can you share about them.
Laura: I sure hope so! I’m not sure where this adventure will take me, but I’m excited about the journey. My dreams is to build a following like Mari Windsor. But really I just hope to share the greatness of Pilates. It has helped my life in so many way – from keeping me fit both physically and mentally to getting me in back shape after the birth of my twins. Even if you aren’t doing my Pilates, I hope everyone will do some version of Pilates. It is a fantastic way to keep the body active as it matures.

After a warmup exercises include dip & overhead press combos, front & side raise combo, upper back fly, tri kickbacks, squat variation combo adding tempo changes & balance challenges, bi curl & plies, pushups, pliet & upright row, shoulder press, side lunge-squat-and overhead press combo, side step squats, deadlifts, and concludes with a balance series, lying leg work and a core routine before the stretch.

I rate this a solid intermediate routine that can be made more or less challenging depending on the weight you use. Lots of great multi-muscle combos and tons of tempo changes keep it interesting & keep your muscles guessing. I heavied up and got a GREAT workout! Tracie is a great instructor and I really enjoyed this workout. I received this dvd to review.
